It can be a diesel or gasoline engine and have a longer range and speed. A control system regulates which drive is used at what time. Depending on the driving situation, the hybrid drive automatically selects the most energy-efficient combination of combustion engine and electric motor.

The functionality of the hybrid engine is often based on the start-stop system. The internal combustion engine switches off automatically as soon as the vehicle stops. The same thing happens when braking. When braking, the vehicle's battery is recharged through energy recovery. The electric motor, on the other hand, kicks in when starting off and when driving slowly in many stop-and-go cities.
